The purpose of Bible study is not to make us smarter sinners, nor clever devils. The purpose of Bible study is to make us conform to the image of Jesus Christ. The more we pay attention to what the Scriptures actually say, the more we strive to accurately understand what the Author meant, and the more we strive to consistently apply that understanding to our lives, the more we fulfill the commands of God:
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
